_ABILITIES:
Reflexes and Observation: Yamamoto dedicates a lot of time to baseball, and spends a lot of time training his reflexes. He’s naturally athletic, and has an amazing capacity for learning visually. Yamamoto is very good at applying himself to his studies, and was able to learn his sword style from his father from only seeing each stance once. He’s very dedicated to his improvement, quick to move, quick to act, and has great instincts. Yamamoto makes the right decisions in dire circumstances without much hesitance, and his ability to grow stronger through his training, and his capacity to improve and commit himself makes him a formidable opponent. He has the aptitude to become a natural hitman.
Rain Flames: Coupled with amazing natural skill, Yamamoto also possesses Rain Flames. These flames have the attribute of Tranquility, and when used on another person Yamamoto can slow them down and/or weaken them. He often wraps his sword in these flames so every strike will cause his enemy to slow down very slightly to put him at a greater advantage. He can also manipulate them to create a dense coverage of his flames, which can be use to detect illusions as well as make him seem incredibly fast (since the flames helps to slow down whatever they touch).
Soen Shigure Ryu: Yamamoto’s undefeatable sword style. There are twelve stances in the Soen Shigure Ryu style: eight that Yamamoto was taught (four offensive and four defensive), and four he created himself (all offensive). With this sword style, he can use the water around him as a shield, or mirror. This water can also be substituted by his flames if there’s none around. Yamamoto has another sword move picked up from another swordsman called Attacco di Squalo, which uses shockwaves to temporally paralyze an opponent’s arm. This move can also be used to transfer rain flames and increase that paralysis temporarily.
Of the four stances Yamamoto created and added to Soen Shigure Ryu, one incorporates the use of his box weapons, an Akita dog named Jirou. The stance is broken into two parts, one to ‘sniff’ out opponents, and the other to strike. In addition, Yamamoto has a move that combines stances one through eleven to create a tidal wave of Rain Flames that can slow down a large amount of projectiles to a crawl.
Vongola Necklace of the Rain + Box Weapons Jirou and Kojirou: The Necklace of the Rain allows him to focus his flames, and will let him summon Kojirou, his swallow box weapon that he can use to spread Rain Flames. Jirou, an akita, doesn’t do much except carrying three sword hilts that he can turn into three short swords with his Rain Flames.
Combio Forma: Ugetsu Asari’s Four Irregular Swords: using the three sword hilts Yamamoto creates three blades and holds them in one hand and has Kojirou join with his sword Kintoki Shigure to form a longsword. He can also use the sword hilts as propellants, giving him some aerial advantage in combat.
Combio Forma Version X: With this both Jirou and Koujirou become katanas, and the clothes that Yamamoto’s wearing change as well. His clothing becomes a Kamishimo and a Hakama. He gains bracers on his arms, armor on his feet, and sheathes for his swords.
_PERSONALITY: On the surface, Yamamoto Takeshi is your stereotypical friendly jock. He’s introduced in canon as one of the more popular characters around the protagonist, Sawada Tsunayoshi, who is the reluctant tenth heir to the Vongola Famiglia. He and Tsunayoshi are classmates, and total opposites in regards to their status in the school with Yamamoto being a loveable jock and Tsuna being the class loser. Despite their difference, Yamamoto shows Tsuna the same respect he gives everyone else, helping Tsuna out when the rest of the class abandons Tsuna to clean up the athletics field alone. Both Tsuna and Yamamoto struggle academically (since Yamamoto spends so much of his time dedicating himself to baseball, he’s often too tired to focus on schoolwork), and find common ground.
When introduced in his chapter, Yamamoto is intrigued by Tsuna. The don-to-be had started his training with a powerful mafia hitman and home tutor, Reborn. Because of that training, Tsuna started to garner a lot of attention from his classmates, and Yamamoto felt comfortable approaching him while they cleaned up the athletics field together. He admitted to Tsuna that he felt he’d been in a bit of rut lately, and that his batting average had been falling. He asks for advice, but Tsuna (who lacks much confidence in himself and doesn’t understand Yamamoto’s level of commitment), tells him he needs to ‘put in more effort.’
Yamamoto ran with it and ended up breaking his arm that night.
Yamamoto loves baseball, to the point of obsession. He’s referred to as a ‘baseball freak’ by many of his fellow classmates as both an insult and a nickname. In Yamamoto’s opinion then, baseball was all that he was good at. With a broken arm, he was unable to play and dedicate himself to what he truly saw as his one worth in the world, Yamamoto didn’t see much point in living. He planned to jump off the school’s roof.
Just because Yamamoto was popular didn’t mean he wasn’t lonely. There’s a lot more going on underneath his dumb, happy-go-lucky jock persona than he lets on. Being good at baseball meant Yamamoto would get attention, and that would open him up to the chance to make more friends. While friendly and popular, Yamamoto hadn’t found anyone to recognize him past his persona as a baseball pro until he met Tsuna. Yamamoto is pretty sharp when it comes to social interactions, and is able to read people better than they think he can. Yamamoto knew that his skill, his friendly and goofy personality, and his good looks made him popular. He knew that it was his skill at baseball that made people like him. It was rough to realize that despite his best efforts, Yamamoto wasn’t making friends, and only gaining admirers. When he lost his ability to play, he was convinced he would be left alone. Not wanting to face that reality, he decided to end his life instead.
Tsuna, filled with guilt because it was his advice that got Yamamoto hurt in the first place, confronted Yamamoto. More accurately, he was forced to address the problem (and his own cowardice), at his tutor’s gunpoint. Yamamoto asked if Tsuna understood him, thinking that the class loser would be able to relate to him. Tsuna told him he didn’t, and apologized for the advice he gave when he can’t even follow it himself. Tsuna told Yamamoto he doesn’t pour all of himself into anything, and that suicide is a waste. He makes Yamamoto’s effort to improve sound admirable, and that if he were in Yamamoto’s position, he’d probably regret not putting all of his effort in, that he should do what Yamamoto did with his dying will. Not knowing what else to do after telling all this to Yamamoto, Tsuna turned to leave. But Tsuna’s words struck something in Yamamoto, and he reached out for his classmate, only to tug him back and accidentally break the fence he’d been leaning against. The both fell off the roof, and luckily, Tsuna managed to rescue them both after being shot with a dying will bullet.
This experience changed how Yamamoto views the world, and he also made his first real friend in Tsuna. Both of them were happy to make new friends in each other, but Tsuna’s position as heir to a powerful Famiglia made things complicated. It was somewhat easy (and concerning to Tsuna), that Yamamoto believed the mafia was an elaborate LARP in which he happily engaged in to help Tsuna out. Being Yamamoto’s friend meant having his unending loyalty to Reborn’s delight and Tsuna’s chagrin.
Yamamoto’s willing to give up a lot for Tsuna. On an early mission, when he had a baseball tournament coming up, Yamamoto still fought with all of his might so that Tsuna could continue, knowing that he would be injured during the fight and would be unable to play. A stark contrast from where he was at the start of the story.
As his position as the Vongola’s Rain Guardian, his duty is "to become a blessed shower that settles conflict and washes everything away." This duty fits with his personality as he is easily the most laid back and soothing of the Vongola guardians. While the rest of the Guardians often fight with each other, Yamamoto is the one who, more or less, gets along with them all. He is also the one member that arguably gets along with Tsuna the best.
It’s also through Tsuna that Yamamoto makes the rest of his friends. Yamamoto made his first friend through a life and death experience, and a lot of his other relationships have similarly rocky starts. His relationship with Gokudera Hayato, Tsuna’s self-proclaimed right-hand man, is one of the most important relationships in Yamamoto’s life. Their relationship started out rocky due to Yamamoto more or less coming from nowhere and getting along with Tsuna better then Gokudera does. Yamamoto clearly enjoys baiting and winding Gokudera up, and the two bicker and banter often. Gokudera threatens Yamamoto’s life on a regular basis, and often threw dynamite at him, which Reborn would allow (for training purposes, of course).
However, Gokudera’s jealousy of Yamamoto’s easy-going relationship with Tsuna got in the way of them having a real friendship, of having complete trust in each other. Yamamoto acted as though it didn’t bother him until they were thrown into their future and forced to battle a Mafioso from a rival family, Gamma. Instead of working together, Gokudera insisted on fighting on his own, despite the fact that their opponent was more experienced, and possessing abilities that neither of them at the time fully understood. Yamamoto’s seemingly infinite patience finally ran out, and he called out Gokudera in the middle of battle. Telling him that holding onto his relationship with Tsuna at the expense of everyone else wasn’t just hurting him, but hurt Tsuna in the long run. He ended up telling him that if he were to continue to act like that, he’d never be fit to call himself Tsuna’s Right Hand.
They get their act together after this, but they’re still no match for Gamma and are defeated by him. Still, it was a turning point in their relationship. And ever since, they’ve been a team. A team that bickers a lot, but a strong team that has each other’s backs nonetheless.
Tsuna’s mafia tutor Reborn also takes an interest in Yamamoto. Reborn, who is the world’s strongest hitman, often states that Yamamoto, with his natural athletic abilities, reflexes, and quick wit, has potential to be a natural born hitman and makes an effort to train him. Yamamoto on his part thinks it’s all a game because Reborn is cursed to look like a toddler, and that the weapons Reborn uses against him are high tech toys. Yamamoto goes out of his way to make sure Reborn feels included despite his supposed age, and treats him with respect, thinking that Reborn is a brilliant toddler.
Eventually, Yamamoto proves trustworthy enough that Reborn tells Yamamoto about the Arcobaleno Curse placed on him, which he doesn’t share with any other members of the family in the series until much later on when it becomes more relevant and gains its own arc.
Despite being somewhat spacey, thinking that the whole mafia thing is a game, and being a poor student, Yamamoto is pretty smart. His poor grades are due to lack of motivation than a lack of intelligence, as he proves he can solve complicated problems if he just settles down to learn the subject matter. Yamamoto’s also a frighteningly fast visual learner. He picks up swordsmanship easily without thorough training, and can defeat others who are self-taught. It’s only until he goes up against someone who is a trained swordsman that he has problems.
Yamamoto is a confident and proud person. He never expresses doubt and the words “I think…” hardly ever cross his lips. However, he’s willing to learn when he’s proven wrong, and after meeting and getting defeated by Superbi Squalo, the Sword Emperor, he’s made to realize that he can’t just wing it when it comes to swordsmanship, and that he needs training. Yamamoto sought his father’s help, who he knew practiced kendo when he was younger, and asked to be trained. He and his father became closer because of this, and Yamamoto’s respect for his father grew a lot. In fact, Yamamoto Tsuyoshi is the only person that Yamamoto feels he can never defeat in battle, no matter how much he trains.
This sentiment doesn’t extend to other swordsmen he encounters. His second battle with Squalo ends with his victory. His confidence in his swordsmanship grew, and he continued to train with the sword, splitting his attention between it and baseball. However, he wasn’t able to give up one for the other, as both would suffer. Sort of. Yamamoto’s ability for both grew, and while he was still good at both, his growth isn’t as fast as it could have been had he focused on one.
Yamamoto learned that the hard way when he was in the future and fought an illusion-using swordsman called the Phantom Knight. The Phantom Knight defeated Yamamoto after a close battle by making him run into a wall. Humiliated, Yamamoto decided to give up on baseball so that he could focus entirely on the sword and prioritize protecting his Famiglia.
With both Squalo and the Phantom Knight, Yamamoto never showed any resentment over his defeats. On the contrary, Yamamoto extended his hand in friendship, thankful for the reminder that he could improve, and that he should never become complacent. Squalo became a close friend despite trying to kill him twice. Squalo even took Yamamoto on as an apprentice of sorts, and trained him so that he could defeat the Phantom Knight during their next encounter.
Whatever friendship there might have been with the Phantom Knight was cut short, however, as the Phantom Knight was killed by his own boss as punishment for his defeat at Yamamoto’s hands. That death ignited Yamamoto’s seldom seen anger, and he vowed to avenge the fallen swordsman.
That hadn’t been the last time that Yamamoto showed such concern for an enemy. With Mizuno Kaoru from the Simon Famiglia (another rival), he made an effort to befriend because of their shared love of baseball. Kaoru is the opposite of Yamamoto in a lot of ways; the Vongola is prosperous while the Simon are poor, Yamamoto is personable and considered handsome, while Kaoru is not in either respect. Despite this, however, Yamamoto saw someone he could relate to. Kaoru too is a lonely soul who loves baseball. When Yamamoto accidentally uncovered the Simon’s plot against the Vongola, Kaoru attacked him and left him for dead on the floor of the baseball clubroom.
On death’s door, Yamamoto wrote in his blood the biggest hint he could give the rest of the Vongola of the attack that later came, showing his loyalty to the family and his impressive will to keep them safe.
Despite Kaoru’s and the rest the Simon’s betrayal, Yamamoto was still able to see the loneliness inside Kaoru. He recognizes that Kaoru would do anything for his Famiglia, just like Yamamoto would, and forgives him. Once Yamamoto healed, he fought to defend Kaoru from Daemon Spade, an old ghost that had been manipulating the Simon Famiglia into fighting the Vongola. When Kaoru was injured, Yamamoto once again showed his rare angry side, and stated he’d be willing to kill Daemon Spade for hurting his Famiglia and friends.
Yamamoto can be a bit of a troll, a trait that’s only encouraged by Reborn, who is a major troll himself. Yamamoto is smarter than he lets on, and while he initially thought that the whole mafia thing was a game, how long he thought that is debatable. At some point, he learned it’s not just a game, as his life was put on the line, and he ended up in the future for an extended period, but he still insists that the mafia is a game. One reason for that is it probably soothes Tsuna, who doesn’t want his friends getting involved in the mafia. If Tsuna till believes that Yamamoto is convinced it’s a game, maybe Tsuna could convince himself that Yamamoto will eventually leave and enjoy a normal future. It’s unlikely that will ever happen, but for the time being it helps ease Tsuna’s feelings. Another reason is that it annoys Gokudera, and Yamamoto enjoys riling him up.
Overall, Yamamoto Takeshi is a nice boy who will do anything for those he considers his friends. He’s good for a laugh, willing to play a game of baseball with just about anyone. He’ll be friendly with many, but close to a few, and he will hurt whoever tries to hurt his Famiglia and friends. He’ll stand up for those who can’t defend themselves because that’s what Tsuna would do, but he’s not above revenge for those who hurt those he cherishes.
